Prison visits and support for inmates

Human support for prisoners and their families

Within the activities of GVV Lombardia, support for prisoners and their families represents a constant, delicate, and deeply human commitment. Through visits, interviews, and small concrete gestures, volunteers offer a listening ear, closeness, and help to people who are going through the difficult experience of imprisonment or the social isolation associated with it.

In some cases, such as the Como Group, this commitment has taken the form of actual services within the Como prison, born out of previous projects and now consolidated into targeted programs of listening and accompaniment, as well as reading together. Volunteers enter the prison, where possible, to create spaces for dialogue where prisoners can express themselves, reflect on their condition, and embark on paths of awareness and change.

Concrete support for prisoners' families

The Sondrio Group focuses in particular on supporting prisoners' families, who are often affected by economic and social fragility. Volunteers assist them not only by offering moral support, but also through practical interventions such as preparing packages with essential personal hygiene items to be delivered to family members in cases where it is not possible to access the prison directly.

In other GVV Lombardy Groups, where permitted, regular visits are made to prisoners to offer them an opportunity for human interaction and reflection on their past and future in an atmosphere of respect and acceptance. This is a silent but fundamental form of support, ensuring that people are not left alone during one of the most difficult phases of their lives and promoting social reintegration that is free from prejudice and rich in dignity.
